    Why and when do I need to change my driver's license?

    To begin with, there is the so-called Vienna Convention, the signatories of which recognize each other's driving licenses. Parties to this convention are countries such as Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Tajikistan and many others. This shows two important facts at once:

    1. Licenses of the above mentioned countries (and other countries, see the full list) are recognized on the territory of Poland, but they must be replaced in the case of long-term residence (after 185 days from the date of receipt of the residence permit) with a Polish driver's license;
    2. Citizens of the countries participating in the Vienna Convention do not take any examinations.

    As it was said above: it is necessary to replace the driver's license after 185 days of stay on the territory of Poland counting from the moment of receiving the card. There is an opinion that you can leave Poland and come back, which will “reset” the 185-day limit. This is not true. The total number of days in a year is taken into account. Moreover, if you are involved in a traffic accident, the insurance company will have a reason not to cover you.

    How long do I have to wait for a Polish driver's license?

    The whole process takes from 1 to 5 months and depends on many factors. You should also take into account the fact that it takes more time to obtain a certificate of the fact of issuance of your license through the consulate than to obtain the certificate in person at the place where your license was issued (the request will be processed by the country where the license was issued and it will take additional time).

    Where do I replace my driver's license?

    Driver's license is changed at the place of your residence registration (zameldowanie).
