Which documents are required for a driving licence exchange?

The exact document set depends on the issuing country, validity period, licence category and requirements of the competent authority. The list below contains the documents most commonly required.

For a Belarusian driving licence

  • Application for the exchange of a driving licence
  • Passport
  • Residence card, visa or another document confirming legal stay in Poland
  • Belarusian driving licence
  • Copy of both sides of the driving licence
  • Sworn Polish translation of the driving licence
  • Current 35 × 45 mm photograph
  • Proof of payment for issuing the Polish driving licence
  • Proof of address or registered address (zameldowanie), when required by the authority
  • Confirmation of the licence's validity from the issuing authority

For a Ukrainian driving licence

  • Application for the exchange of a driving licence
  • Passport or another identity document
  • Residence card, visa, UKR status or another document confirming the right to stay in Poland
  • Ukrainian driving licence
  • Copy of both sides of the driving licence
  • Current 35 × 45 mm photograph
  • Proof of payment for issuing the Polish driving licence
  • Proof of address or registered address (zameldowanie), when required by the authority
  • Sworn translation, when required in the individual case
  • Confirmation of the licence's validity from the issuing authority

Confirmation that the driving licence is valid

The validity of the licence must be confirmed separately. This confirmation is issued by the authority that issued the licence and is often absent from standard document lists.

For a Ukrainian licence, the confirmation may be obtained through the consulate, where Reserve+ may be required, or through a law firm in Ukraine. The document then requires an apostille and a sworn translation into Polish.

For a Belarusian licence, the confirmation is obtained from the issuing authority or through the consulate. An apostille and a sworn translation are then also required.

Important information

  • The 185-day rule is calculated using the total number of days in the year. Leaving and re-entering Poland does not reset the period.
  • When the licence has expired, a medical certificate will also be required.
  • A psychological certificate may be required for professional categories.
  • A licence issued by an EU country does not have to be exchanged solely because of residence in Poland. Expiry, damage or loss is assessed separately.
  • Failure to exchange the licence may give an insurer grounds to dispute coverage after a road accident.

Is the foreign driving licence retained when it is exchanged for a Polish licence?

Yes. The foreign driving licence must be surrendered during the exchange procedure.

The Polish authority issues the new prawo jazdy after the foreign document has been returned. The Polish licence may not be issued when the applicant does not surrender the foreign one.

This should be considered in advance, particularly when you intended to keep the Ukrainian, Belarusian or another foreign licence “just in case”. After the exchange, the Polish prawo jazdy becomes the principal document used for driving in Poland.

Driving licence exchange for Ukrainian, Belarusian and other foreign citizens

Ukrainian driving licences

We assist with exchanging a Ukrainian driving licence for a Polish one. We check whether the document qualifies for exchange, whether a translation is required, which documents confirm legal stay and whether the authority may impose additional requirements.

Reserve+ is not part of the standard basic document list for a driving licence exchange in Poland. In an unusual case, we separately check which additional evidence may be required.

Belarusian driving licences

When a Belarusian licence is exchanged, the authority may verify the issuance of the licence and its details. A confirmation from Belarus and a sworn Polish translation may be required.

We explain in advance which documents should be prepared to reduce the risk of delays.

Driving licences issued by other countries

When a licence was issued by another country, it is necessary to check whether it is recognised in Poland and whether it complies with the Vienna or Geneva Convention. This determines whether the exchange can be completed without an examination or whether the theory part of the state examination is required.

Frequently asked questions

Can an expired foreign driving licence be exchanged?
Amendments introduced by the Act of 17 October 2025 (Journal of Laws 2025, item 1676) to Article 14(1a) of the Act on Vehicle Drivers entered into force on 17 December. A foreign driving licence that has expired may now be exchanged for a Polish driving licence.
Do I need to exchange a Ukrainian driving licence for a Polish one?
When you live in Poland long term, work, study, run a business or hold a residence card, exchanging the Ukrainian licence is advisable. After a long period of residence, a foreign licence may raise questions during a roadside check or after an accident.
Do I need to exchange a Belarusian driving licence for a Polish one?
Yes, when you live in Poland permanently or for an extended period. A translation and confirmation of the licence's issuance details are often important for a Belarusian licence.
Can I check the status of the Polish driving licence online?
Yes. Use https://info-car.pl/new/prawo-jazdy/sprawdz-status-prawa-jazdy and enter your PESEL number, first name and surname.
I have refugee status. Can I exchange my driving licence?
Yes. A person with refugee status is also exempt from confirming the issuance of the driving licence in the country of origin. The exchange may take approximately 7–14 days.
How long does a driving licence exchange usually take?
The full procedure usually takes between one and five months.
Can a Ukrainian driving licence be exchanged without Reserve+?
Yes, when you do not apply to the Ukrainian consulate for confirmation of the driving licence. This option is explained in more detail above.
Is an examination required?
An examination is generally not required when the foreign licence complies with the Vienna or Geneva Convention. When the document does not follow a convention format, the authority may require the theory part of the state examination.
Can a driving licence be exchanged while staying in Poland on a visa?
Yes. A visa may confirm the right to stay, but the period of residence, address, validity of the licence and requirements of the competent authority must also be checked.
