A residence card (Karta Pobytu) is a plastic document that confirms your identity and your legal stay in Poland. Residence cards are divided into two types: temporary residence (pobyt czasowy) and permanent residence (pobyt stały). Temporary residence is usually granted for a fixed period (up to 3 years) and depends on the purpose of stay. Permanent residence is granted for an indefinite period; however, the physical card must be replaced periodically (typically every 5/10 years).

To obtain a Polish residence permit, you need to have one of the following grounds:
job;
running a business;
study at a Polish university, Post-secondary school (szkoła policealna);
Karta Polaka;
Polish origins;
citizenship of any European country;
family reunification on the basis of marriage to a Polish citizen;
reunification with a family member who has a residence card or a Pole card.
