A residence card (Karta Pobytu) is a foreigner's identity card. There are two types of residence cards: temporary residence permit (czasowy pobyt) and permanent residence permit (pobyt stały). In the first case you get a residence permit for up to three years, in the second case - a residence permit for 10 years with the possibility of extension. To obtain a Polish residence permit, you need to have one of the following grounds:

job;
running a business;
study at a Polish university, Post-secondary school (szkoła policealna);
Karta Polaka;
Polish origins;
citizenship of any European country;
family reunification on the basis of marriage to a Polish citizen;
reunification with a family member who has a residence card or a Pole card.
